What you'll study

This undergraduate programme combines core social-science theory with quantitative methods and applied policy coursework. Students study foundational topics such as microeconomics for public policy, statistics and econometrics for policy analysis, research design, and cost–benefit and programme evaluation methods. Core modules are complemented by electives across policy areas — for example health policy, environmental and energy policy, urban policy and housing, education policy, immigration, and public finance.

The curriculum typically includes a sequence of quantitative courses (statistics, regression analysis, causal inference), classes in policy process and institutions, and practical, skills-focused units such as policy communication, data visualisation, and practicum or internship placements. Many students also undertake a capstone project or senior thesis in which they apply analytical methods to a real policy question, often in partnership with faculty, the Baker Institute for Public Policy or local organisations in Houston.

Entry requirements

Admission to Rice is competitive and follows a holistic review of academic achievement and wider potential. Typical applicants will present a strong secondary-school record with rigorous coursework in mathematics and social sciences; success in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other advanced programmes is advantageous.
