What you'll study

This programme combines disciplinary methods from political science, history, anthropology, economics and language studies to give concentrated knowledge of one or more world regions (for example Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa or the Middle East). Core work typically includes comparative regional theory, research methods for area studies, regional history and contemporary politics. Students build specialist competence through advanced seminars focused on themes such as development and governance, security and conflict, transnational migration, political economy, media and cultural production.

• Language training – sustained instruction in a regional language to reach professional working proficiency.
• Research methods – quantitative and qualitative methods, archival and ethnographic techniques tailored to regional research.
• Elective seminars – topical courses that allow deep dives (e.g. energy and regional security; urbanisation and social policy; literature and national identity).
• Capstone or thesis – students choose between a supervised research thesis or a practice-oriented capstone project and practicum that can include fieldwork or an internship.
• Fieldwork and study abroad – encouraged and often supported, to gain on-the-ground experience and primary research contacts in the chosen region.

Entry requirements

Admissions expect a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (for UK applicants, normally an upper second-class degree or equivalent). Applicants should submit academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining their regional interests and research plans, a current curriculum vitae, and at least two academic or professional letters of recommendation. A writing sample is often requested for research-track applicants.

International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through recognised tests or qualifications. Demonstrated prior study or competence in the target regional language is advantageous but not always mandatory; some applicants begin language training as part of the programme. The programme may interview shortlisted candidates as part of selection.
