What you'll study

The programme blends technical, managerial and strategic modules to give you a rounded view of cyber security in organisational contexts. Teaching typically covers the threat landscape and defensive technologies alongside governance, risk management and the legal/regulatory environment. You will learn how to translate technical issues into business risk and to design policies, processes and organisational responses.

• Foundations of Cyber Security: core concepts in confidentiality, integrity and availability, common attack vectors, and basic cryptographic principles.
• Security Architecture and Secure Systems: principles of secure system design, network security, secure software development and industrial control systems security.
• Risk Management and Governance: frameworks for assessing and managing cyber risk, security governance, policies and standards, and board-level reporting.
• Incident Management and Resilience: detection, response and recovery processes, business continuity planning and operational resilience.
• Legal, Regulatory and Ethical Issues: data protection, compliance regimes, cyber law and the ethical dimensions of security practice.
• Security Operations and Analytics: SOC processes, threat intelligence, log analysis and the use of analytics for monitoring and detection.
• Management Practice and Leadership: change management, project management for security programmes, stakeholder engagement and strategic decision-making.
• Applied Project or Dissertation: a substantial piece of applied work, often industry-linked, in which you tackle a real-world cyber security management problem under academic supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree (typically equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours or above) in a relevant subject such as computing, engineering, mathematics, business, management or a related discipline. Applicants with professional experience in IT, information security, or related roles may also be considered. You should be able to demonstrate an interest in both technical and managerial aspects of cyber security.

Non-native English speakers are required to meet the university's English language proficiency requirements; details of acceptable qualifications and evidence are provided by the university. Meeting minimum academic or language thresholds does not guarantee admission — selection also considers references, personal statement and any relevant experience.
