What you'll study

This programme combines core theoretical and methodological training with specialist modules on contemporary security issues. You will engage with debates in international security, strategic studies, conflict analysis and emerging domains such as cyber security, technology and security. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, case-study workshops and a substantial supervised dissertation or research project.

• Core themes: theories of international security, causes and conduct of war, deterrence and strategy, security governance and ethics.
• Research methods: qualitative and quantitative methods for security research, research design and evidence evaluation.
• Specialist options: terrorism and counter-terrorism, intelligence and security studies, cyber and information warfare, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, regional security (e.g. Europe, Middle East, Asia), and human security topics such as migration and humanitarian intervention.
• Dissertation: an independently researched project under departmental supervision that allows you to develop a sustained piece of analytical work on a security-related question.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours) in politics, international relations, history, security studies, economics, law, or another relevant social science. Candidates with substantial professional experience in security, government, international organisations or the military may also be considered. All applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University of Warwick's English language requirements; acceptable evidence includes recognised language tests or equivalent qualifications. Admission decisions take account of academic record, references, personal statement and, where applicable, work experience.
