What you'll study

The programme combines advanced coursework with supervised research, allowing you to specialise in areas such as literary studies (British, American and postcolonial literatures), linguistics (theoretical and applied), discourse and sociolinguistics, translation and interpretation studies, and language teaching methodology. Core study typically includes research methods in the humanities, seminars in specialised topics (for example modern literature, Shakespeare, comparative literature, corpus linguistics, or pragmatics), and workshops in academic writing and presentation. Students are expected to attend regular small-group seminars, present research in departmental forums, and complete a substantial master's thesis under faculty supervision.

Applicants normally need a recognised bachelor's degree in English, linguistics, education, or a closely related humanities/social-science discipline. Typical application materials include official academic transcripts, a statement of research intent or proposal outlining your planned area of study, letters of recommendation, and a curriculum vitae. Proof of English proficiency is required for non-native speakers; acceptable evidence can include recognised test scores or equivalent demonstration of ability. Some applicants may be invited to an interview (oral or remote) or asked to submit a writing sample. Knowledge of Japanese is useful for daily life and some research contexts but is not usually a formal requirement for admission to English-medium supervision.
