What you'll study

This programme combines core education studies with specialised papers in second language learning and English language teaching. You will study the linguistics and pedagogy that underpin effective TESOL practice and gain hands‑on teaching experience through supervised practicum placements.

• Language learning and linguistics: introduction to phonology, grammar and lexis for teachers; second language acquisition theories; sociolinguistics and multilingualism.
• TESOL methodology: lesson planning, classroom techniques for younger and adult learners, teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, pronunciation teaching.
• Curriculum, assessment and materials: designing objectives and sequences for language programmes, formative and summative assessment, producing and adapting teaching materials, use of digital resources.
• Intercultural communication and inclusion: working with diverse learners, culturally responsive practice and supporting learners with additional needs.
• Professional practice: supervised practicum(s) in school or language centre settings, classroom management, reflective teaching and professional ethics.
• Research and pedagogy: introduction to educational research methods, evaluation of teaching interventions and opportunities to undertake a small research or capstone project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to meet the University of Auckland's general undergraduate admission standards including recognised secondary school qualifications. Prospective students should have demonstrated competence in English and relevant academic achievement in humanities or languages where possible. International applicants must meet the University's English language requirements through an accepted test or prior study in English-medium education.

Because the programme includes school and community placements, offers may be conditional on satisfactory background checks and health or vaccination requirements as set out by placement providers. Relevant prior experience or volunteer work with language learners can strengthen an application.

• English language teacher in private language schools, community education centres and adult learning providers.
• English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructor or pathway programme teacher in tertiary institutions.
• ESOL/EAL classroom teacher support roles in primary and secondary schools or specialist ESOL teacher positions (often combined with further certification).
• Curriculum developer, materials writer, teacher trainer or assessment specialist for educational organisations and publishers.
• Further study leading to postgraduate qualifications in TESOL, applied linguistics, education or teacher registration pathways.
