See the degree grade →The Bachelor of Science (BSc) at the University of Otago is a flexible three‑year undergraduate degree that lets you build a programme across biological, physical, mathematical and earth sciences, as well as interdisciplinary areas such as environmental science and data science. It suits students who want a strong scientific foundation, practical laboratory and field experience, and the option to specialise or combine disciplines before moving into professional roles or further study.
The BSc is built around a major subject (or combined majors) and a selection of papers from across the Faculty of Science. In first year you typically take introductory core papers that develop quantitative and laboratory skills, for example introductory biology, chemistry, physics, calculus/statistics, and scientific communication. From second year you progress into level‑200 and level‑300 papers specific to your chosen major(s).
Entry is based on meeting the University of Otago's general undergraduate admission criteria. Applicants are expected to have a recognised secondary school qualification equivalent to New Zealand University Entrance. For specific majors, prerequisite subjects at senior secondary level are often required—for example, calculus or higher‑level mathematics for mathematics, statistics or physics majors; chemistry for chemistry or biochemistry; and biology for ecology and many biology‑based majors.
A BSc from Otago prepares graduates for a wide range of careers. Many graduates move into scientific and technical roles in research institutes, environmental consultancies, healthcare laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies. Others apply their quantitative and analytical skills in data science, finance, IT and analytics roles.
