What you'll study

This master's combines core project management theory with construction-specific practice. You study modules covering the planning, control and delivery of construction projects, legal and procurement frameworks, commercial management and contemporary topics such as digital construction and sustainability. Teaching typically includes lectures, workshops, group design-and-build simulations, case studies drawn from industry and an individual research or design project.

• Commercial Management and Cost Control – estimating, cost planning and cost risk management.
• Risk, Health & Safety Management – identification and mitigation of risk, statutory duties and safety management systems.
• BIM and Digital Construction – digital workflows, information management and digital collaboration tools used in project delivery.
• Sustainable and Low Carbon Construction – environmental performance, lifecycle thinking and sustainable procurement.
• Research Methods and Professional Practice – research skills, ethics and preparation for the major project or dissertation.
• Major Project / Dissertation – an extended piece of independent research, design or industry-linked consultancy work on a topic in construction project management.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject such as civil engineering, building surveying, architecture, construction management or a closely related discipline. Candidates with substantial professional experience in the construction industry but without a conventional degree are also considered. All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English to a level appropriate for postgraduate study; evidence of previous degree-level study in English or an approved language qualification is normally required.

Career prospects

Graduates move into professional roles across the construction sector, including project manager, site or construction manager, contracts manager, commercial manager, programme manager, BIM coordinator and client-side project roles. The degree also supports careers in consultancy, construction consultancy practices, main contractors, specialist contractors, developers and public-sector bodies.
