FieldSport Rehabilitation

The MSc Sport Rehabilitation is a clinically focused postgraduate programme that develops advanced skills in the assessment, management and prevention of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries. It suits graduates and practitioners from sport science, sports therapy, physiotherapy and related backgrounds who want to progress into rehabilitation roles in elite sport, clinical practice or research.

What you'll study

This programme combines applied clinical teaching with research methods to prepare you for advanced practice in sport and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Core areas include injury assessment and differential diagnosis, evidence-based rehabilitation planning, exercise prescription for recovery and prevention, manual therapy approaches, advanced soft-tissue techniques and load management strategies for return to sport.

  • Clinical assessment and differential diagnosis — systematic history-taking, objective assessment of joints and soft tissues, special tests and clinical reasoning.
  • Rehabilitation techniques and exercise prescription — designing progressive, individualised programmes addressing strength, neuromuscular control, flexibility and proprioception.
  • Load management and return-to-play — principles of load monitoring, phased return-to-sport frameworks and risk stratification.
  • Manual therapy and adjunctive modalities — evidence-informed hands-on skills, soft-tissue techniques and therapeutic adjuncts used in practice.
  • Biomechanics and movement analysis — use of video and laboratory-based analysis to inform intervention and injury prevention.
  • Imaging and diagnostics — interpretation of common imaging reports and understanding their role within clinical decision-making.
  • Research methods and dissertation — training in research design, statistics, critical appraisal and completion of an independent research project on a topic relevant to sport rehabilitation.
  • Clinical practice and placements — supervised practical experience in sports clinics, NHS or performance settings, integrating theory with patient care.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject such as sport and exercise science, sports therapy, physiotherapy or a related health science. Applicants with professional qualifications and relevant practical experience in sports rehabilitation or allied professions are also considered. Evidence of recent clinical experience and competency in musculoskeletal assessment will strengthen applications.

Specific requirements may include:

  • A recognised undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent professional qualification).
  • Demonstrable practical experience in a clinical, sporting or rehabilitation environment.
  • For some applicants, professional registration in a relevant regulator may be required or advantageous (for example HCPC registration for physiotherapists).
  • Applicants whose first language is not English will typically need to demonstrate an acceptable level of English language proficiency.
  • Successful clearance checks and up-to-date immunisations may be required for placement components.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to a range of clinical and performance roles. Typical career destinations include working as a sport rehabilitation clinician or sports therapist in elite and grassroots sport, roles within NHS musculoskeletal services, private practice, or multidisciplinary performance teams as a rehabilitation specialist.

Other pathways include progressing to advanced clinical practice, combining rehabilitation with strength and conditioning roles, moving into research or teaching, or pursuing a PhD. The programme also supports those seeking specialist roles such as return-to-play coordinator, injury prevention lead or consultant in sport medicine environments.
