What you'll study

The programme combines a rigorous design studio with technical, theoretical and professional modules. Core study areas typically include advanced design studio projects, building technology and environmental performance, construction and detailing, digital design and fabrication, history and theory of architecture, and professional practice. You will normally complete a major project or dissertation that allows sustained investigation of a design or research question, supported by workshops, modelmaking and digital production facilities.

• Design studio: Design-led, semester-long studio projects that develop conceptual, technical and presentation skills through iterative design, crits and reviews.
• Building technology and environmental design: Integration of structure, services and passive/active environmental strategies to deliver comfortable, low-energy buildings.
• Digital design and fabrication: Parametric modelling, BIM workflows and use of digital fabrication equipment for prototype and full-scale making.
• History and theory: Critical approaches to architectural discourse, contextual analysis and cultural frameworks that inform design decisions.
• Professional practice and project management: Business of architecture, legal and contractual frameworks, procurement and the transition to professional practice.
• Major project / dissertation: An independent research or design thesis demonstrating synthesis of intellectual, technical and representational skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant undergraduate qualification such as a RIBA/ARB Part 1 architecture degree or a good honours degree in a related discipline, often at UK upper second-class (2:1) level or equivalent. Applicants with substantial professional experience or an alternative academic background may be considered on a case-by-case basis. A portfolio of design work is a key part of the application and should demonstrate conceptual thinking, design process and technical competence.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to show evidence of proficiency in English. Where applicable, admissions tutors may also ask for a brief interview or an online discussion as part of the assessment process.

Career prospects

Graduates typically progress towards professional registration by completing the required Part 2 stage of architectural education and then entering practical training and subsequent Part 3. Career destinations include roles in architectural practice as project architect or design architect, positions in urban design and masterplanning, specialist consultancy in sustainability or facade engineering, BIM and digital design coordination, construction and project management, and research or teaching in higher education. The programme also provides a platform for those who wish to pursue further scholarly research at doctoral level.
