What you'll study

The programme combines taught modules on experimental and quantitative methods with an extended, independent research project. Core teaching covers advanced statistics for behavioural and neural data, experimental design, and research ethics. Practical training emphasises common cognitive neuroscience techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), eye‑tracking, behavioural psychophysics and multivariate analysis approaches. Students also receive instruction in programming for cognitive neuroscience (for example Python or MATLAB), signal processing, and introduction to neuroimaging analysis workflows.

The MRes is structured to maximise hands‑on research training: you will complete intensive short modules and workshops in the first part of the year, and then devote a substantial period to a supervised laboratory research project culminating in a written thesis and oral examination. Teaching typically includes journal clubs, research seminars and opportunities to contribute to ongoing research groups within the School of Psychology.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good UK undergraduate degree (2:1 or equivalent) in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, biological sciences, computer science, engineering or another quantitative discipline. Candidates with a 2:2 plus relevant research experience, a relevant MSc, or strong evidence of quantitative and programming skills may also be considered.

Practical research experience (for example laboratory work, a dissertation project, internships or research assistant roles) and competence in statistics and programming strengthen an application. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements.

Graduates from this MRes commonly progress to PhD study in cognitive neuroscience, psychology or related fields; the intensive research training is designed to prepare you for competitive doctoral programmes.
