The Creative Computing with Foundation Year BSc is a four-year undergraduate degree that combines core computer science skills with creative practice, preparing students to design and build interactive media, digital experiences and creative technology. The foundation year supports students with varied backgrounds to develop study skills and the technical grounding needed to progress onto the three-year honours programme.

What you'll study

This programme begins with a foundation year that introduces essential study skills, mathematics for computing, introductory programming and fundamentals of digital media and design to ensure all students start the honours years with a solid base. In the subsequent three years you will study a blend of computer science and creative subjects covering:

  • Programming and software development — object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, and software engineering practices.
  • Creative coding and interactive media — generative art, creative uses of code, multimedia programming and tools for sound, image and animation.
  • Human–computer interaction and user experience — interaction design, usability, prototyping and user-centred design methods.
  • Graphics and visual computing — 2D/3D graphics principles, rendering, shader programming and real-time visualisation.
  • Web and mobile development — front-end and back-end web technologies, responsive design and mobile app development.
  • Data handling and machine intelligence — databases, data visualisation, basic machine learning and creative applications of AI.
  • Networks, security and systems — fundamentals of computer systems and networking relevant to interactive applications.
  • Final project and portfolio — an independent or team project that synthesises technical and creative skills, producing a substantial artefact and professional portfolio piece.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory classes, studio sessions and project-based modules. Assessment typically combines coursework, practical projects, presentations and examinations. Optional modules may allow you to focus more strongly on areas such as games, AR/VR, digital fabrication or multimedia production.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a recognised secondary school qualification such as A-levels, a BTEC National Diploma, an appropriate Access to Higher Education qualification, or an equivalent international qualification. A background in mathematics or technology is advantageous; applicants without formal qualifications but with relevant life or work experience are also considered.

As this programme contains substantial programming and numeracy content, candidates are expected to demonstrate readiness for either foundation-level study or direct entry to the honours years depending on prior attainment. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of English language proficiency.
