What you'll study

This degree covers the technical, managerial and regulatory aspects of building and civil construction. You will study construction materials and methods, structural fundamentals, building services coordination, and the legal and contractual framework that governs projects. Modules typically include construction technology and detailing, construction project management, estimating and cost control, building legislation and compliance, health, safety and risk management, and sustainability in construction.

Digital and practical skills are emphasised: expect units in building information modelling (BIM) and construction software, construction scheduling and site planning, surveying basics, and hands-on workshop work or simulated site environments. The programme progressively develops from foundational science and measurement skills in the early years to integrated project work, design co-ordination and professional practice in later stages, often culminating in a capstone project or industry-linked assignment.

Entry requirements

• University Entrance or equivalent secondary qualification from New Zealand or an international equivalent.
• Preparation in mathematics is recommended (algebra and geometry) and physics or technology subjects are advantageous for technical units.
• Applicants with relevant trade qualifications, diplomas or practical construction experience may be considered for admission through Massey’s alternative or pathway entry processes.
• All applicants must meet Massey University’s English language requirements through prior study in English or an approved English proficiency test.
• Mature applicants without formal qualifications can often apply on the basis of work experience and may be required to present a portfolio or attend an interview.

Typical job titles include construction manager, site supervisor, estimator, project coordinator, building inspector, contract administrator and construction planner.
