What you'll study

This is a research-focused doctoral programme combining advanced coursework with an extended laboratory or field research project that culminates in a defended dissertation. Core study areas reflect the breadth of biomedical science and typically include advanced molecular and cell biology, genetic and genomic technologies, immunology, physiology, and biomedical data analysis.

• Research project: The major component is an original research thesis conducted under the supervision of one or more faculty members. Projects may be laboratory-based, translational or population health–oriented, depending on the chosen supervisor and research group.
• Advanced coursework: Courses commonly cover research methods, bioinformatics and biostatistics, experimental design, and specialised modules aligned to the student’s research (for example, molecular techniques, cancer biology, neurobiology, immunopathology or regenerative medicine).
• Seminars and journal clubs: Regular participation in departmental seminars and research meetings to present work in progress, critique literature and engage with visiting researchers.
• Research training and ethics: Training in laboratory safety, research integrity, responsible conduct of research and the regulatory framework for clinical or human-subjects research.
• Assessment: Progress is monitored through a combination of coursework assessment (where required), a qualifying or comprehensive examination, a research proposal defence, annual progress reviews and the final thesis defence.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant master's degree (MSc, MPhil or equivalent) in biomedical science, life sciences, medical sciences or a closely related discipline with a strong research component. Exceptional candidates with a high-quality bachelor’s degree plus substantial research experience may also be considered.

• Academic transcripts demonstrating strong performance at previous degree level(s).
• A substantive research record or evidence of research potential, such as a master’s thesis, publications, conference presentations or relevant laboratory experience.
• A clear research proposal or statement of research interests that aligns with departmental expertise, and ideally identification of a potential supervisor within the university.
• Letters of recommendation (usually two or three) from academic or professional referees who can attest to the applicant’s research aptitude.
• Proof of English language proficiency if previous degree was not taught in English (accepted tests include internationally recognised exams or equivalent institutional evidence).
• A selection interview may be required as part of the admission process.
