What you'll study

The programme combines core modules in software engineering with hands-on development work and a substantial individual project. Typical taught topics include software design and architecture, object-oriented and functional programming, databases and data modelling, software testing and quality assurance, requirements engineering, and development for web and mobile platforms. You'll study contemporary practices such as agile methods, DevOps toolchains and version control, and gain exposure to cloud deployment and continuous integration.

Learning is delivered through lectures, lab sessions and team-based projects that mirror industry workflows. The MSc culminates in a research-informed individual project or industry-sponsored project that requires you to specify, implement and evaluate a complete software solution, demonstrating professional engineering practice and technical report writing.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK honours degree (or international equivalent). For candidates with a computing-related undergraduate degree, a 2:2 is often the minimum; a 2:1 or equivalent is commonly required for direct entry to taught MSc programmes. Applicants from non-computing backgrounds but with relevant work experience, a strong portfolio of programming projects, or successful completion of a conversion or foundation module may also be considered.

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University’s English language requirements; typical acceptable scores include IELTS at the level commonly required for postgraduate study (with a minimum in each component).
