What you'll study

The programme covers a mixture of fundamental mechanical engineering subjects and motorsport‑specific modules, delivered through lectures, laboratory work, design projects and workshop practice. Early years focus on engineering mathematics, mechanics, materials, thermofluids, electronics and CAD to build a solid technical foundation. As you progress you study vehicle dynamics, suspension and tyre theory, internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, aerodynamics, control systems, data acquisition and analysis, and composite materials and manufacturing techniques.

Practical learning is embedded throughout: students use CAD/CAM tools, simulation packages, engine and driveline test rigs, data logging systems and composites workshops. Individual and group design projects culminate in a substantial final year project where you apply multidisciplinary skills to a motorsport engineering challenge. The course normally offers the option of an industrial placement year or study abroad period to gain workplace experience and industry contacts.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong ability in mathematics and a science or engineering subject at Level 3 (for example A‑level, BTEC or equivalent). Typical applicants have studied A‑level Mathematics and Physics or an engineering‑related BTEC alongside other subjects. Practical workshop experience, independent project work and an enthusiasm for motorsport are beneficial. International applicants will need to meet the university's English language requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates move into roles such as graduate design engineer, vehicle dynamics engineer, race engineer, test and development engineer, powertrain or control systems engineer, CAD specialist, composites technician and data analyst. Many find employment with racing teams, performance divisions of OEMs, motorsport suppliers, test houses and engineering consultancies. The degree also provides a pathway to postgraduate study and professional development within engineering institutions.
