This undergraduate degree in International Relations explores the political, economic and social interactions between states, international organisations and non-state actors. It suits students who want to understand global issues such as diplomacy, security, development and human rights and who are aiming for careers in policy, international organisations, journalism, or further study.

What you'll study

The BA International Relations programme combines theoretical study with applied analysis of contemporary global affairs. Across the course you will study core themes such as theories of international relations, global security, international political economy, diplomacy and foreign policy, human rights and global governance. Modules typically cover the historical development of the international system, the role of international organisations, conflict and conflict resolution, and the impact of globalisation on states and societies.

The degree is usually structured over three years (with an option for a sandwich year or study abroad year where available), with progressive emphasis from foundational theory in the first year to specialised options and independent research in later years. Typical elements include:

  • Core introductory modules on IR theory, research methods and contemporary global issues.
  • Intermediate modules such as Comparative Foreign Policy, International Political Economy, Security Studies, Conflict and Peacebuilding, and Human Rights.
  • Final-year options and a dissertation or extended research project allowing you to specialise on a topic of your choice.
  • Skills training in academic research, policy analysis, quantitative and qualitative methods, and oral and written communication.
  • Opportunities for language study, work placements, and short-term study exchanges to build practical experience and international perspective.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have completed secondary education with qualifications recognised by UK universities. Typical offers are made to students with a combination of A-levels, BTEC qualifications, or an International Baccalaureate diploma, together with a pass in English language at GCSE or equivalent. Mature applicants and those with relevant work or international experience are considered on an individual basis.

International applicants should meet English language requirements through recognised qualifications or secure a pre-sessional English programme where necessary. Admissions decisions also take account of personal statements, references and any relevant extracurricular experience that demonstrates interest and potential in international affairs.

Career prospects

Graduates from International Relations programmes develop analytical, research and communication skills that are valued across the public, private and third sectors. Common career paths include roles in diplomacy and foreign services, international organisations and NGOs, government policy and analysis, defence and security, journalism and media, and international business and consultancy. Many graduates also progress to postgraduate study in international relations, development studies, law, public policy or related fields.

The degree is designed to equip you with transferable skills—such as critical thinking, data interpretation, project management and cross-cultural communication—that support careers where understanding global context and negotiating between different interests is important.
