What you'll study

This programme combines intensive language learning with study of Welsh culture, linguistics and communication. In early stages you consolidate core skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing Welsh; later stages move towards advanced grammar, oral fluency, translation and composition. Modules commonly cover topics such as Welsh phonetics and pronunciation, modern and historical Welsh literature, sociolinguistics, language teaching methodology, multimedia and digital Welsh, and community and cultural studies.

Yearly structure typically mixes compulsory language classes and optional modules that let you specialise. You can expect assessed coursework, oral exams and presentations, translation exercises, language portfolios and a dissertation or major project in the final year. Many students take a work placement or community project module to gain practical experience in schools, media outlets, public organisations or voluntary groups.

Entry requirements

Applicants are accepted from a range of backgrounds, including those with little or no prior Welsh. Entry is usually based on academic qualifications such as A-levels, BTECs or equivalent qualifications; typical offers are within a mid-to-high A-level grade range or an equivalent tariff score from other recognised qualifications. Mature students and those with relevant experience are welcomed.

Where relevant, applicants may be asked to complete a short language assessment to place them on the correct pathway (beginner, intermediate or advanced). Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate competence in English for study purposes; specific GCSE requirements in English or mathematics may be requested depending on the combined programme or professional routes (for example, teacher training).
