What you'll study

This degree integrates physical geography, environmental science and climate-focused topics across three years. You learn how Earth systems operate, how human activities drive the climate emergency, and how mitigation and adaptation strategies are developed and implemented.

Typical structure

• Year 1: foundational modules in physical geography, introductory climatology, environmental chemistry and ecology, basic GIS and statistics, and practical field and laboratory skills to build core techniques.
• Year 2: intermediate modules such as climate systems and variability, hydrology, soil and geomorphology, environmental monitoring, applied GIS and remote sensing, plus options exploring environmental policy, sustainability or ecosystem services.
• Year 3: advanced specialist modules on climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation, modelling and climate data analysis, plus a substantial independent research project or dissertation on a topical climate or environmental science question. Students can usually choose elective modules to tailor study toward policy, conservation, or technical skills.

Practical fieldwork is a strong element throughout the programme, with opportunities to carry out investigations in coastal, estuarine and upland settings including nearby locations such as the Gower Peninsula. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, GIS and modelling workshops, field trips and supervised research projects.

Entry requirements

Swansea typically looks for applicants who have strong science or geography backgrounds at school or college. Typical UK applicants will present A-levels (or equivalent qualifications) with emphasis on at least one science or geography subject. Applicants with BTEC, Access to HE diplomas or international qualifications are considered on their merits.

Most applicants will be expected to demonstrate competence in mathematics and English (for example GCSE at grade 4/C or equivalent), and some prior study in a relevant science or geography subject is advantageous. International students should meet Swansea's English language requirements through recognised tests or prior qualifications.
