This BEng programme covers the core principles of materials engineering alongside practical laboratory and computing skills. You will study how microstructure controls mechanical, thermal and electrical properties and learn common processing routes for metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
The programme emphasises practical skills through laboratory sessions and workshops. Many students have the opportunity to take an optional industrial placement or work-based learning year to gain experience in industry; shorter project placements and industry-linked project topics are also common.
Applicants should normally have strong post-16 qualifications demonstrating competence in mathematics and at least one science subject (typically physics or chemistry). Typical offers are in line with standard UK A-level requirements for engineering degrees; accepted qualifications include A-levels, BTECs (with appropriate science or engineering units), International Baccalaureate and recognised international equivalents.
Required subjects: A-level mathematics is usually required or highly recommended. Physics and/or chemistry at A-level are commonly expected or counted as complementary subjects. Applicants without both sciences may still be considered if they demonstrate substantial relevant experience or prior study.
Other entry routes: mature students and those with relevant vocational qualifications or HNC/HND routes are welcome; selection will consider academic background and practical experience. International students should meet the university's English language requirements.
Graduates from a materials engineering degree go into a wide range of technical and professional roles. Common destinations include materials engineer, process engineer, product development, quality and failure analysis, corrosion and surface engineering, manufacturing engineering, and materials testing and characterisation.
Industry sectors employing materials graduates include aerospace and defence, automotive, energy and renewables, medical devices and biomaterials, electronics and semiconductors, construction and infrastructure, and specialist materials supply chains.
