What you'll study

This BSc programme covers both physical and human geography, emphasising practical skills and research methods. In the early years you study core topics such as physical geomorphology, climatology, human geography, and introductory GIS and statistics. As you progress you can choose option modules to focus on areas such as coastal and marine environments, hydrology, environmental change and sustainability, urban and regional development, and remote sensing.

Fieldwork is an integral part of the course, with short residential trips and day visits to coastal, upland and urban sites to practise mapping, surveying and environmental monitoring techniques. Practical training includes spatial data analysis, GIS projects, quantitative data handling and laboratory methods. The final year typically includes a substantial independent research project or dissertation, allowing you to apply skills to a topic of your choice under academic supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a suitable secondary school leaving qualification with three full A‑levels (or equivalent). While geography or a related subject (for example geology, biology, environmental science, mathematics or economics) is advantageous, it is not always essential; applicants with a strong interest in both physical and human geography are encouraged to apply. The university accepts a range of qualifications including BTEC, International Baccalaureate and international equivalents.

Typical offers may include specific subject requirements or grades that reflect the competitiveness of the year; evidence of competence in English is required for international applicants (for example an approved English language qualification). Admissions tutors also consider personal statements, references and any relevant practical experience.
