What you'll study

This programme brings together core international relations theory and methods with focused study of American politics, society and foreign policy. In year one you will build a foundation in political theory, global politics, introductory research methods and modules introducing US government and culture. In subsequent years you will take intermediate and advanced modules such as US Domestic Politics, US Foreign Policy, Comparative Politics, Global Security, International Political Economy, and Politics of Race and Identity in the United States.

Students complete a substantial independent research project or dissertation in the final year on a topic linking international relations and American studies. Optional modules often include diplomacy and negotiation, media and politics, human rights, migration, European–US relations, and language units supporting study of relevant regions. The programme offers opportunities for a year-long work placement or an overseas study year, allowing students to gain practical experience or study at a partner institution.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a secondary school qualification equivalent to UK A-levels. Typical offers take academic performance at A-level into account; successful applicants will usually have strong grades in social sciences, humanities or related subjects. The University welcomes International Baccalaureate, BTEC, Irish Leaving Certificate and other international qualifications judged as equivalent.

Applicants should demonstrate competence in written and oral English; non-native speakers must provide evidence of English language ability at the level required by Swansea University. GCSE (or equivalent) passes in English and mathematics are normally expected. Admissions tutors will also consider personal statements, references and any relevant work or voluntary experience.
