What you'll study

This BSc focuses on the physical processes that shape landscapes and control environmental systems. Core topics include geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, Quaternary environments, soil science and sediment dynamics. Practical skills are developed through modules in field methods, laboratory techniques, environmental monitoring, and spatial analysis using GIS and remote sensing.

The programme is typically organised across three years, with progressively advanced modules and a substantial independent research project or dissertation in the final year. Typical module themes and activities include:

• Fundamentals of geomorphology — river, coastal and glacial processes and landform development.
• Hydrology and water resources — catchment processes, flood risk, hydrograph analysis and water quality.
• Climate and environmental change — past climates, contemporary climate drivers and impacts on landscapes.
• Quaternary environments and palaeoenvironmental techniques — reconstructing past environments from sediments, peat and proxies.
• Soil and sediment science — soil formation, classification and sediment transport.
• GIS, remote sensing and spatial data analysis — acquiring, processing and interpreting spatial datasets for environmental applications.
• Field methods and laboratory practice — extensive fieldwork on riverine, coastal and upland systems, plus lab-based sample analysis and instrumentation.
• Research project/dissertation — an independent investigation applying theory and methods to a physical geography question, often involving field and/or spatial data.

Students can often tailor the degree through optional modules that reflect environmental management, applied statistics for geosciences, or interdisciplinary topics. There is usually an option to take a placement year or study abroad to gain practical experience and professional contacts.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate scientific aptitude and numeracy. Typical academic offers for entry include A-levels with stronger grades in relevant subjects such as Geography, Biology, Earth Sciences, Mathematics or Physics. Swansea also accepts equivalent qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate, BTEC, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers and recognised international qualifications.

Other admissions considerations include practical field experience, a personal statement describing interest in physical geography, and references. Mature applicants and those with relevant work or voluntary experience are welcomed; supporting documentation and interview (where used) will be considered in assessing suitability.
