What you'll study

This programme combines core biomedical science with specialist clinical training in cardiac physiology. You will study cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology of cardiac disease, and the principles of diagnostic technologies used in clinical cardiology. Typical topics and modules include:

• Fundamentals of Human Physiology – cell biology, organ systems and integrated physiological control relevant to cardiac function.
• Cardiovascular Pathophysiology – mechanisms of heart disease, heart failure, ischaemia and arrhythmia.
• Diagnostic Cardiac Techniques – 12‑lead and ambulatory ECG interpretation, exercise testing, Holter monitoring and heart rate variability analysis.
• Echocardiography and Imaging Principles – transthoracic echocardiography basics, Doppler assessment, and the role of imaging in cardiac diagnosis.
• Invasive and Device Technologies – introduction to cardiac catheterisation laboratories, pacemakers and implantable devices, and device follow‑up clinics (theory and observational experience where available).
• Research Methods and Data Analysis – statistics, study design and critical appraisal to support evidence‑based practice and a final year research project or dissertation.
• Clinical Skills and Professional Practice – practical training in clinical measurement, patient assessment, infection control, communication and professional behaviour in healthcare settings.

Practical learning is a large component of the degree. You will undertake laboratory classes in physiology and biomedical measurement, simulation‑based sessions and supervised clinical placements in local NHS cardiology departments. The course typically progresses from foundational science in early years to specialist, placement‑linked learning and an independent research project in the final year.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong science background. Typical entry requirements include A‑level or equivalent qualifications with passes in science subjects (biology, human biology, physics or chemistry are preferred). Level 3 vocational qualifications such as BTEC in a relevant health or science subject are considered. GCSEs in English and Mathematics (or equivalent) are usually required.

All applicants must be able to meet the demands of clinical placements: this commonly involves satisfactory occupational health screening, up‑to‑date immunisations, an enhanced DBS (criminal records) check, and the ability to travel to placement sites across regional health boards. International students should present recognised equivalent qualifications and evidence of English language competence.
