What you'll study

This three-year Bachelor of Science programme introduces core economics together with a broad range of business subjects. In the first year you build foundations in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics for economists and introductory statistics alongside business fundamentals such as accounting, organisational behaviour and marketing. Teaching emphasises the quantitative tools used in applied economics and decision-making.

In the second year you study intermediate micro- and macroeconomics, econometrics and applied data analysis, with options to take modules in finance, corporate strategy, human resource management and international business. Practical classes and computer workshops develop skills in statistical software and data handling.

In the final year you choose from advanced options such as labour and public economics, development economics, financial economics, forecasting and advanced econometrics, and you complete a substantial independent project or dissertation applying economic methods to a business-related topic. An optional placement year (a 'sandwich' year) is available for students who wish to gain workplace experience between the second and third years.

Assessment methods include written exams, coursework essays, data-led reports, group projects and the year-long dissertation or placement report, reflecting the balance between theoretical understanding and practical application.

Entry requirements

Typical offers are based on national qualifications such as A-levels, BTEC, Access to Higher Education, or international equivalents. Acceptable profiles commonly fall within a range that reflects competitive entry to a business and economics degree (for example, mid–high A-level grades or an equivalent BTEC/Access profile). Applicants are expected to have competence in mathematics—at least a GCSE grade 4/C in Mathematics or an equivalent qualification is usually required; some offers may request A-level Mathematics or Further Mathematics depending on background.

Swansea University considers applications from mature students and those with non-traditional qualifications; relevant work experience is taken into account. International applicants should meet the university's English language requirements (commonly an IELTS or equivalent level appropriate for undergraduate study).
