What you'll study

This programme covers the core modules needed for a qualifying law degree alongside applied practice elements and politics modules. In year one you typically study Legal Methods, Contract Law, Tort, Criminal Law, Public (Constitutional and Administrative) Law and an introduction to Politics such as British Government and Political Ideas.

In subsequent years you build on those foundations with modules such as Land Law, Equity and Trusts, EU and International Law, Commercial Law, Human Rights and Evidence, together with practice‑oriented modules in Legal Skills, Advocacy, Client Interviewing and Professional Conduct. Politics components commonly include Comparative Politics, Public Policy, International Relations and Political Institutions or Policy Analysis.

The degree emphasises practical learning: mooting and advocacy opportunities, simulated client work, pro bono clinics run in conjunction with the University’s Legal Advice Clinic and assessed legal drafting. There is explicit practice preparation through modules on legal research and workplace skills.

Students can usually opt for a placement year or a shorter workplace placement module to gain experience in firms, courts, government departments or NGOs. A final year research project or dissertation option allows students to explore a legal or political topic in depth.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a secondary school qualification equivalent to A‑levels, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, or a recognised international equivalent. Typical offers are in line with standard UK law undergraduate requirements; the programme also accepts Access to HE Diplomas and relevant BTEC qualifications where substantiating evidence of ability to complete academic study is provided.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements; this is commonly satisfied by a recognised test such as IELTS or an equivalent qualification. Mature applicants and those with non‑traditional backgrounds are considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview to discuss suitability and motivation.

Career prospects

Graduates of this LLB are well placed to progress to vocational legal training for careers as solicitors, barristers or chartered legal executives (subject to completion of the required postgraduate vocational courses and workplace training). The programme’s practice elements and placement opportunities also prepare students for immediate roles as paralegals, legal assistants or caseworkers.

Because of the integrated politics content, graduates frequently move into policy and public sector roles such as policy adviser, local or national government roles, civil service posts, campaign and advocacy positions in NGOs, or roles in international organisations. Other common destinations include compliance, human resources, consulting and further academic study at postgraduate level.
