FieldSport And Exercise Science

This BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Performance Science combines applied coaching practice with the science that underpins athletic performance. It suits students who want a career blending hands-on coaching, performance analysis and strength & conditioning, or those aiming to progress to postgraduate sport science or coaching qualifications.

What you'll study

The programme integrates core sport and exercise science disciplines with practical coaching and performance support. You will cover exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, and coaching pedagogy. Teaching typically blends lectures, practical laboratory sessions, seminars and workplace-based learning.

  • Year 1 / foundational modules: introductions to human physiology, biomechanics, coaching theory, basic research methods, and practical coaching opportunities to develop core skills.
  • Year 2 / applied depth: applied exercise physiology and testing, movement analysis, sport psychology for performance, performance analysis technologies, and structured coaching practice with feedback.
  • Final year / synthesis and professional practice: advanced strength & conditioning, advanced performance analysis, a substantial research project or dissertation, and an extended placement or consultancy-style module working with a club, school or community programme.

Assessment methods include practical assessments, laboratory reports, portfolios of coaching evidence, reflective essays, presentations and a final research project. Many modules emphasise real-world application, requiring you to design and evaluate coaching interventions and performance support strategies.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a level of achievement in secondary education equivalent to typical undergraduate entry standards (for example A-levels, a relevant BTEC or access qualifications). Typical offers are in line with similar sport and exercise science programmes and will consider a mix of qualifications and relevant experience.

  • Relevant practical experience of coaching, sport leadership or volunteering is highly desirable and will strengthen an application.
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or equivalent are commonly requested by course providers for professional progression; applicants should check specific requirements with admissions.
  • International students must demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test or equivalent qualification (for example an IELTS level commonly accepted by UK universities for undergraduate study).
  • Applicants with non-traditional backgrounds are welcome; contextual information, references and an interview or audition may be used in selection.

Graduates are prepared for a range of roles across sport and exercise sectors. Common career destinations include:

  • Sports coach or coaching coordinator in clubs, schools and community organisations
  • Performance analyst and data support roles within clubs and performance programmes
