What you'll study

This programme builds a broad foundation in physical geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, structural geology and mineralogy, combined with applied modules in geochemistry, hydrogeology and geological mapping. You will learn practical skills in field mapping, sample collection, petrographic microscope analysis, basic geochemical techniques and digital methods such as GIS and remote sensing. Teaching mixes lectures and small-group practicals with regular field courses — including multi-day residential trips — that reinforce observational and mapping skills in a variety of rock types and landscapes.

Entry requirements

Typical entry expectations reflect a standard three-year honours degree. Applicants are usually required to hold relevant qualifications such as A-levels (including at least one science subject, frequently geology, physics, chemistry or biology) at grades commonly requested for science degrees. BTEC National Diplomas in a related subject are considered, often alongside A-levels. Access to Higher Education diplomas, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, and recognised international qualifications (for example, IB) are also accepted when they demonstrate suitable science content and attainment.

Applicants should normally have a good grounding in mathematics and science at GCSE or equivalent. Mature students with relevant work or practical experience are encouraged to apply. International applicants are expected to meet the University's English language requirements.
