It suits students who want a broad business education with a clear focus on HR practice, employment relations and people development.
The programme blends core business management modules with specialist human resource management topics. In the early years you study foundational subjects such as organisational behaviour, marketing, accounting and finance, operations management and business law, together with introductory HR modules covering recruitment and selection, employee relations and performance management.
Later stages of the degree introduce more advanced HR content such as learning and development, reward and benefits, employment relations, strategic human resource management and HR analytics. Students also study research methods and complete a substantial final-year project or dissertation that allows focused study on an HR or management issue. Teaching employs a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies, group projects and assessments that reflect workplace practice (presentations, reports, consultancy-style briefs and reflective logs).
The course typically offers opportunities to undertake a professional placement year or a study-abroad experience, enabling applied learning with employers or international partners. Optional modules and live client projects allow you to tailor your degree towards interests such as talent management, organisational development, entrepreneurship or digital HR.
Applicants are expected to meet the University’s standard undergraduate entry criteria, demonstrated by qualifications such as A-levels, BTEC or equivalent vocational awards, or an international qualification accepted by the University of Hull. Typical applicants will hold passes in relevant subjects and show evidence of numeracy and communication skills.
Evidence of English language proficiency is required for applicants whose first language is not English; the University publishes acceptable qualifications and alternative evidence for this. Mature applicants and those with work experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered through alternative admissions routes. Successful applicants are usually expected to show interest in business or people management through personal statements, references or interview where applicable.
Graduates go on to a wide range of roles in HR and business management. Common entry-level jobs include HR assistant/advisor, recruitment consultant, graduate management trainee, learning & development coordinator, and employee relations specialist. With experience, alumni progress to roles such as HR business partner, talent manager, remuneration analyst, organisational development consultant or senior HR manager.
The degree also provides a strong foundation for careers beyond HR in general management, consulting, project management, or entrepreneurship. Many students pursue professional qualifications (for example CIPD) or postgraduate study to specialise further or to enhance progression to senior roles.
Hull Business School delivers business and HR programmes informed by applied research and close links with regional and national employers. Students benefit from small-group teaching, practical assessments that mirror employer expectations, and dedicated career and employability support including placement preparation, employer events and CV/interview coaching.
The University’s campus environment and support services help students balance academic and professional development. Opportunities for work placements, live consultancy projects and industry guest speakers give direct exposure to HR practice, while options to study abroad broaden international understanding of employment systems and workplace cultures.
Overall the programme is designed to develop the business awareness, analytical skills and people-management capabilities employers seek, providing a clear route into HR and broader management careers.
