What you'll study

This programme combines close reading, historical context and contemporary critical approaches to give a rounded understanding of literature in English. You will study core topics such as poetry, the novel and drama across periods—medieval and early modern literature (including Shakespeare), Romantic and Victorian writing, twentieth-century and modernist literature, and contemporary and postcolonial writing. Modules emphasise literary history, genre and form, and introduce key methods from literary theory and cultural studies.

Students take a mixture of lectures and small-group seminars and will develop skills in research, critical argument and extended academic writing. Typical components include an introductory module on approaches to literary study, period-focused modules (for example Romanticism, Victorian literature, modernism), thematic options (such as gender and literature, literature and the body, adaptation and film), and a substantial independent dissertation or long project in the final year. There are also optional modules in creative writing, film studies and digital humanities, and opportunities for work-based learning or a placement depending on the route chosen.

Structure

• Year 1: introductions to literary study, representative period modules and foundational skills in research and analysis.
• Year 2: a wider choice of period and thematic modules, closer work on critical approaches, and optional pathways such as creative writing or film adaptation.
• Year 3: advanced seminars, a substantial independent dissertation or project, and specialist options aligned with staff research interests.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised qualification equivalent to UK A-levels, such as BTEC, Access to Higher Education, or an international diploma. A good level of written English is required; applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirements via recognised tests. Mature applicants and those with relevant experience are welcome and assessed on the strength of their overall application.
