What you'll study

This postgraduate certificate focuses on advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning and the application of research evidence to practice. Typical topics and modules include clinical assessment and differential diagnosis, managing long-term conditions and complex presentations in primary and secondary care, evidence-based practice and improvement, and professional and interprofessional aspects of clinical decision-making. Teaching combines campus-based seminars, simulated clinical practice, case-based learning and supervised practice in the clinical workplace.

The programme is delivered in modular format and is suitable for part-time study alongside employment. On completion you will have developed higher-level clinical judgement, patient-centred care planning skills and the ability to evaluate and implement changes to practice informed by evidence and service need. The award also prepares students for further study at master’s level or for taking on extended and advanced practice roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to be a registered healthcare professional with a relevant UK or international registration body (for example nursing, midwifery, or allied health professions). You will typically need a degree or equivalent professional experience and evidence of recent practice. Employers’ support or agreement to provide supervised practice time may be required for some modules.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate an acceptable level of English language competence. You will also be asked to provide references and may need to undergo occupational health checks and a criminal record check where clinical placement or supervised practice is involved.

Career prospects

Graduates use the PGCert to progress into advanced clinical roles such as specialist practitioner, advanced practitioner, clinical team leader or community clinical lead. The programme enhances skills relevant to working with complex caseloads, autonomous decision-making, clinical assessment and patient management across acute, community and primary care settings. It also provides a recognised academic credential for those looking to move into clinical education, service improvement roles or to continue onto postgraduate taught programmes such as an MSc in Advanced Practice or related disciplines.
