What you'll study

The PhD in BSBE is a research-led programme centred on an independent thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge in a field of business, management or economics. Typical areas of study include organisational behaviour, finance, accounting, marketing, innovation, entrepreneurship, operations and decision sciences, and applied economics. Students undertake a structured programme of research training that may include modules in research methods (qualitative and quantitative), advanced econometrics, behavioural methods, ethics and data management.

In the early stages you will develop and refine a research proposal, complete compulsory and elective training modules, and present work in progress at seminars. The degree normally progresses through formal milestones such as confirmation/upgrade from MPhil to PhD, annual progress reviews and a final viva voce examination. Students are expected to produce working papers, submit to journals and conferences, and to take part in the research culture of their supervisory centre.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a good undergraduate degree (typically a UK 2:1 or equivalent) and, in most cases, a relevant Master’s degree with a strong research component or evidence of research potential. A clear research proposal that identifies research questions, methods and potential contribution is required, together with academic references and a curriculum vitae. Candidates whose first language is not English must meet the university’s English language requirements.

Specific entry depends on the supervisor’s capacity and the fit between the candidate’s proposal and the School’s research strengths. Some applicants may be asked to provide samples of written work or to attend an interview with potential supervisors.

Career prospects

Graduates of the BSBE PhD go on to careers in academia as lecturers and researchers, or to research roles in think-tanks, government departments and international organisations. The analytical and methodological skills developed on the programme are also valued in consultancy, finance, data science, senior management and policy roles across the public and private sectors.
