What you'll study

The Master of Research combines intensive training in research methods with a supervised research project that culminates in a major thesis. You will study core topics such as research design, advanced qualitative and quantitative methods, ethics and responsible research practice, literature review and scholarly communication. Depending on your discipline and selected pathway, coursework subjects can include specialised methodological units (for example in statistics, experimental design, or mixed methods), discipline-specific research seminars, and professional development modules covering grant writing and research impact.

The principal component of the degree is an extended independent research project under the guidance of approved supervisors. This project includes developing a research proposal, conducting the project, analysing data and writing a thesis of research-based output. The programme is typically structured to provide staged milestones: proposal and ethics approval, mid-project progress reviews and final thesis submission, supported by regular supervisory meetings and research training workshops.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised bachelor degree with a significant research or honours component, or a relevant postgraduate qualification. Applicants who hold a bachelor degree without honours but with demonstrated research experience or substantial professional experience in a research-relevant role may also be considered. A clear research proposal and the availability of suitable supervision are important elements of a successful application.

All applicants must meet the university's English language requirements for postgraduate study; international applicants should demonstrate proficiency through an accepted test or equivalent qualifications. Additional documentation such as academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, a statement of research intent and referee reports will usually be required.
