What you'll study

This honours degree builds a foundation in mathematics, mechanics, materials and thermodynamics before progressing to applied modules in design, manufacturing and systems engineering. Teaching blends lectures and seminars with laboratory work, CAD/CAM sessions, workshop practice and group design projects. A typical three-year structure covers:

• Year 1: engineering mathematics, statics and dynamics, materials and manufacturing fundamentals, introduction to engineering design and computing for engineers.
• Year 2: mechanics of solids, thermofluids, control and instrumentation, computer-aided design and simulation, manufacturing processes and a team design project.
• Year 3: advanced design and optimisation, specialist options (for example HVAC, automotive engineering, renewable energy systems or advanced materials), professional and management themes, and an individual honours project.

Practical work is carried out in the university's engineering workshops, laboratories and CAD suites, and modules place emphasis on real-world problem solving, health and safety, and professional practice. There are usually opportunities for short industry-linked projects and work placements to develop employability skills.

Entry requirements

• A typical offer will require A-levels including Mathematics; appropriate grades in STEM subjects are normally expected. Exact grade requirements vary by intake and should be confirmed with the university.
• Relevant Level 3 vocational qualifications (for example BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering) are considered; applicants presenting vocational qualifications may be asked for specific units in mathematics and physics.
• GCSEs: passes in English and Mathematics at the expected level (or international equivalents) are normally required.
• International applicants should present recognised qualifications equivalent to the above and may need to demonstrate English language proficiency.
• Admissions also take account of personal statements, references and any relevant practical experience; mature applicants are assessed on their wider experience.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a wide range of engineering roles, including design engineer, manufacturing or production engineer, maintenance and reliability engineer, project engineer, HVAC and building services engineer, and roles in energy and renewables, automotive and aerospace sectors. Many graduates join graduate schemes and technical teams in small and large companies, or progress to specialist postgraduate study such as MSc programmes.

The degree is structured to support progression towards professional registration through engineering institutions; graduates can follow routes to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or, with further learning and experience, Chartered Engineer (CEng).
