What you'll study

This integrated masters programme blends biomedical science, clinical assessment and hands-on emergency care with research methods and professional development. Early modules build core knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, together with communication skills and person-centred care. You will then progress to modules on clinical decision-making, advanced assessment, medical and trauma emergencies, paediatrics, mental health crises and care of older adults.

Practical learning is central: simulated clinical scenarios, clinical skills laboratories and repeated supervised placements with regional ambulance services form a substantial part of the curriculum. The integrated masters year includes advanced practice topics such as critical care pre-hospital interventions, leadership and service development, and a significant research or practice-improvement project/dissertation that develops your ability to evaluate evidence and lead change in clinical settings.

The programme is structured so that academic learning and workplace practice run in parallel; students must meet required practice hours and demonstrate competence against professional standards. Interprofessional learning with nursing, medicine and allied health students is included to reflect real-world team working.

Entry requirements

• Typical academic requirements: A-levels (including at least one science or health-related subject) or equivalent Level 3 qualifications; Access to HE Diplomas with relevant units are also considered. Keele considers the full profile of applicants.
• GCSEs: Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English language and mathematics; a science GCSE is often desirable.
• Experience and attributes: evidence of exposure to healthcare or caring contexts, clear motivation for pre-hospital care, good communication and resilience. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate suitability in a personal statement and at interview.
• Health and professional checks: satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, occupational health clearance (including vaccinations), and demonstrable fitness to practise are required prior to placement. A valid driving licence may be required for some placements.
• Mature applicants and those with alternative qualifications are welcomed; selection includes interview and may include scenario-based assessments to assess practical potential and decision-making.

Career prospects

Graduates leave the programme ready to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as paramedics and to practise in ambulance services. Typical first roles include frontline paramedic in NHS or private ambulance services and urgent care teams.

With experience and further study, career pathways include advanced or specialist paramedic roles (for example critical care, paediatrics, or primary care), clinical education, operational leadership, commissioning and service development. The research component and masters level qualification also open routes into clinical research, policy roles and doctoral study.

Graduates are employable across health and social care sectors, including NHS trusts, independent ambulance providers, urgent community response services, event medicine and international emergency medical services.
