What you'll study

The MA in History offers a balance of core training in research methods and historiography alongside a range of option modules that reflect Keele's research strengths in social, cultural and global history. You will complete a programme of taught seminars and assessed coursework before undertaking a substantial research dissertation under individual supervision.

• Core research and skills: research methods, archival practice, critical approaches to sources and historiographical debates.
• Thematic and period modules: options typically cover areas such as political and constitutional history, social and labour history, cultural and intellectual history, gender and sexuality, empire and post‑colonial studies, and global or transnational perspectives.
• Public and applied history: modules or workshops that consider museums, public engagement, memory studies and digital approaches to heritage.
• Dissertation: an extended piece of original research supervised by a member of staff, allowing you to pursue a specialised topic in depth and develop independent research skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally hold a good undergraduate degree in history or a related discipline (typically a 2:1 or equivalent). Applicants with a lower honours degree and substantial relevant experience or evidence of ability to undertake postgraduate study are also welcome to apply; each application is considered on its individual merits. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English to a recognised standard. You will be asked to provide academic references and a personal statement outlining your interests and proposed area(s) of study; some applicants may be invited to an interview.

Career prospects

Graduates of the MA in History go on to a wide range of careers. The course develops skills in research, critical analysis, written and oral communication, and project management that are valued across the public and private sectors.

• Further academic study (MPhil/PhD) and careers in research and teaching (including routes into secondary teaching via a PGCE).
• Heritage and cultural sector roles such as museums, archives, curation, conservation and public history engagement.
• Publishing, journalism, media and digital history roles that use strong writing and interpretive skills.
• Positions in the civil service, local government, policy and non‑governmental organisations where research and critical thinking are required.
• Information and library services, and roles in education and outreach.
