See the degree grade →The Economics BA at Keele University is a three-year undergraduate degree that develops core economic theory, quantitative skills and applied policy analysis. It suits students who want a broad social-science grounding in how markets, organisations and public policy interact, with options to build specialist knowledge in areas such as econometrics, environmental economics or development.
The programme introduces core microeconomic and macroeconomic theory alongside practical training in quantitative methods and data analysis. In the first year you study foundational modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics and statistics for economists, and an introduction to economic history and institutions.
In the second year you deepen your analytical skills with modules such as intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, econometrics, and elective options that may include public finance, labour economics, international trade, development economics and environmental economics. You will begin to apply theory to policy and real-world data.
In the final year you choose from advanced option modules and typically complete a research dissertation or extended project. Final-year options commonly cover topics such as behavioural economics, financial markets and institutions, industrial organisation, advanced econometrics, and cost–benefit analysis. Throughout the degree there is an emphasis on using statistical software, interpreting empirical results and presenting policy-relevant findings. Students may also have the opportunity to take a placement year or a period of study abroad as part of a four-year variant of the programme, where available.
Offers are normally based on A-levels, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate or recognised equivalents. Typical academic requirements are in the mid-range of standard offers for social-science degrees. Applicants are usually expected to have a good pass in mathematics at A-level or an equivalent quantitative qualification; if you do not have formal maths qualifications the admissions team will consider evidence of numeracy from other qualifications or relevant experience.
Keele welcomes applications from mature students and those with vocational qualifications. Admissions decisions take a holistic view of personal statements, references and any relevant work or voluntary experience. International applicants must meet English language requirements through recognised tests or qualifications.
Graduates with a BA in Economics move into a wide range of careers in the public, private and third sectors. Common destinations include economic and policy research, financial services and banking, business analysis, market research, consultancy, and roles in central and local government. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy or related disciplines, and for professional training schemes such as accountancy and management graduate programmes.
The programme emphasises transferable skills valued by employers: quantitative analysis, report writing, data visualisation, critical thinking and the ability to make evidence-based recommendations.
Keele offers a campus-based learning environment that combines taught lectures with small-group seminars and tutorial support, allowing close interaction with academic staff.
