What you'll study

This foundation-level programme blends theory and practice to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a Nursing Associate. Core themes include clinical assessment and decision-making, medicines management, long-term conditions, care of older adults, mental health and well-being, safeguarding, and person-centred care. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, clinical skills sessions in simulated environments and supervised placements in NHS and social care settings.

Assessment is a mixture of written assignments, reflective practice portfolios, observed clinical assessments and practical competency sign-offs conducted in partnership with placement supervisors. The curriculum aligns with the standards for the Nursing Associate role and emphasises multi-disciplinary working, ethical practice and effective communication with patients and families.

Entry requirements

Keele typically looks for applicants with a mix of academic attainment and relevant healthcare experience. Applicants will usually be expected to have GCSE-level English and maths (or recognised equivalents) and to demonstrate either prior experience in health or social care or completion of a suitable Level 2/3 qualification. Mature applicants with substantial workplace experience are considered.

All offers are conditional on satisfactory occupational health screening, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and compatible references. Applicants should be prepared to work shifts and attend practice placements across partner trusts and care providers.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify to practise as Nursing Associates, working under the supervision of registered nurses to deliver hands-on care, carry out clinical tasks and contribute to care planning. Typical employers include acute NHS hospitals, community health services, GP practices, mental health services and residential care providers.

The foundation degree provides an established route into registered nursing through further academic study or apprenticeship top-up routes for those who want to train as Registered Nurses. Nursing Associates may also progress into specialist support roles, leadership positions in care teams, education and mentoring, or further study in areas such as public health, mental health or advanced clinical practice.
