What you'll study

The Biology degree at Keele covers the major areas of the modern biological sciences while emphasising practical skills and independent research. In early stages you study fundamental modules such as cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology and ecology, alongside training in laboratory techniques, statistics and scientific communication. As you progress you can choose optional modules to develop specialisms in areas such as microbiology, immunology, neurobiology, conservation biology, plant science, bioinformatics and evolutionary biology.

A key element of the programme is hands-on learning: regular laboratory practicals, fieldwork on Keele's extensive campus and nearby sites, computing and data-analysis sessions, and small-group tutorials. The degree normally culminates in an independent research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff, giving practical experience of experimental design, data collection and scientific writing. There are also opportunities to take a professional placement year or a period of study abroad to gain workplace experience and international perspective.

Entry requirements

Keele welcomes applicants with a range of academic backgrounds. Applicants are usually expected to have A-levels (or equivalent) with Biology or another science subject as one of the qualifications, and a strong achievement profile across three substantial subjects. BTEC, Access to Higher Education and international qualifications are considered provided they demonstrate readiness for degree-level study in the life sciences.

Successful applicants will typically show evidence of practical and analytical ability, genuine interest in biological science, and good communication skills. Where required by the programme, GCSE-level passes (or equivalent) in mathematics and English will be expected. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirements.
