What you'll study

This honours degree builds from core computing fundamentals to advanced and contemporary topics. Early years focus on programming, algorithms and data structures, computer systems, discrete mathematics and databases to establish a solid theoretical and practical base. Later stages introduce software engineering, operating systems, networking, web and mobile development, and modules in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity and human–computer interaction.

The course emphasises practical, project-based learning. You will undertake individual and group projects, culminating in a substantial final-year project where you research, design and implement a software solution. There are opportunities to choose optional modules to specialise — for example in data science, games development, cloud computing, internet of things (IoT) or advanced security topics.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary-school qualification with a strong emphasis on mathematics. Acceptable qualifications typically include A-levels (with mathematics strongly recommended), the International Baccalaureate, BTEC National Diplomas, Access to Higher Education Diplomas or equivalent international qualifications. Applicants without formal qualifications but with relevant work experience or professional qualifications may also be considered.

Good GCSE-level passes in mathematics and English (or equivalent) are commonly required or recommended. International applicants should demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised tests or qualifications. The university may also consider an alternative foundation year entry route for those who need additional preparation for degree-level study.
