What you'll study

This Diploma-level apprenticeship combines practical, hands-on forensic training with the underpinning knowledge required to collect, preserve and analyse digital evidence in a range of environments. Teaching is employer-focused and typically delivered through a blend of workplace learning, block-release workshops and online study.

• Digital evidence acquisition: principles and practices for imaging storage devices, volatile memory capture, and lawful seizure of digital media.
• File system and storage forensics: analysis of file systems, deleted data recovery, and interpretation of storage artefacts.
• Network and cloud forensics: collection and analysis of network traffic, logs, cloud service artefacts and remote evidence preservation.
• Mobile device forensics: extraction and interpretation of data from smartphones, tablets and IoT endpoints.
• Malware analysis and live response: recognising, isolating and analysing malicious code and conducting incident response on live systems.
• Forensic tools and workflow: use and evaluation of common commercial and open-source forensic tools, scripting for automation, and maintenance of reproducible workflows.
• Legal, ethical and evidential considerations: chain of custody, data protection, admissibility of evidence and preparing for expert witness duties.
• Report writing and communication: producing technical reports, communicating findings to non-technical audiences and presenting evidence in investigative or legal settings.
• Work-based project: an applied forensic investigation or improvement project demonstrating competence in a workplace context.

Entry requirements

As an apprenticeship, entry requires employment in an appropriate digital forensics, cyber security or investigative role and an employer willing to sponsor apprenticeship training. Typical academic expectations include a relevant Level 3 qualification (for example an advanced apprenticeship, A-levels or equivalent) or demonstrable substantive work experience in IT/security. Applicants will usually need basic numeracy and literacy (e.g. GCSEs or equivalent) and may be required to pass an employer selection process, security vetting or a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check where the role demands it. English language requirements apply for candidates whose prior education was not in English.
