What you'll study

This programme blends core behavioural science theory with applied health services management. In the early years you build a foundation in research methods, statistics, psychology, sociology and human development alongside introductory public health and healthcare systems modules. Later study emphasises management skills and applied practice: health services administration, organisational behaviour in healthcare, health law and ethics, quality improvement, finance for health organisations, and programme planning and evaluation.

• Core behavioural science modules: social psychology, developmental psychology, research methods and quantitative analysis.
• Health services management modules: introduction to health systems, healthcare finance and budgeting, human resource management in health settings, policy and governance, and quality and safety in health services.
• Applied skills and practicum: internship placements in hospitals, clinics or public health agencies; case management practicum; applied capstone or project on a management challenge in a health setting.
• Electives and special topics: mental health services, community health promotion, substance use interventions, leadership and change management in healthcare.
• Accelerated BS/MPA pathway: qualifying students can begin graduate-level MPA coursework in the senior year, shortening the time to a Master of Public Administration with a health services focus once progression criteria are met.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school leaving qualification or equivalent. Typical applicants will present a competitive academic record with strengths in social science, maths or biology. Mercy College considers a combination of academic performance, personal statement and references; for some applicants, an interview or evidence of relevant volunteer/work experience in health or social care may be requested.

International applicants must present equivalent qualifications and meet the College's English language requirements. For the accelerated BS/MPA pathway, students are normally required to achieve and maintain a specified cumulative GPA and meet any additional departmental conditions before beginning graduate coursework.
