What you'll study

The programme combines practical studio work with theory, musicianship and industry-focused business modules. Core subjects typically include recording techniques, digital audio workstation (DAW) production (Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton Live or equivalent), mixing and mastering, microphone theory and studio signal flow, live sound and monitoring, and sound design. You will also study music theory and ear training, arranging and composition, electronic music production, and MIDI and synthesis.

• Studio practice: multitrack recording, overdubbing, editing and session workflow.
• Production skills: beat-making, sampling, sequencing and arrangement for multiple genres.
• Technical studies: acoustics, analog and digital signal processing, consoles and outboard gear.
• Mixing & mastering: EQ, dynamics, spatial effects, stereo imaging and final delivery formats.
• Music theory & performance: harmony, ear training, ensemble playing and songwriting.
• Music business & professional practice: copyright, licensing, distribution platforms, project management and freelance skills.

Students progress through studio-based projects each year, building a portfolio of recordings and productions. The degree often culminates in a capstone project or senior recital/portfolio where students produce and present a professional-grade body of work.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Typical academic requirements include satisfactory grades in relevant secondary-school subjects; specific criteria may vary by campus. Applicants are usually expected to demonstrate musical ability or experience—this can be evidenced by a portfolio, recorded samples, or a live audition/interview. Basic keyboard skills and familiarity with music software are advantageous but not always mandatory.

Graduates with a BS in Music Production pursue a range of careers across the music, audio and media industries. Common roles include record producer, audio engineer, mixing/mastering engineer, sound designer, live sound technician, studio manager and music programmer. Skills gained are also applicable to film, television and game audio roles such as dialogue editing, Foley, or music supervision.
