What you'll study

The DNP curriculum emphasises application of evidence to practice, healthcare systems improvement, population health, and leadership in clinical settings. Coursework commonly covers advanced health assessment and diagnostic reasoning, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, healthcare policy and finance, informatics, implementation science, and quality improvement methods.

Students also complete scholarly work in the form of a DNP project that addresses a practice problem through implementation and evaluation of an evidence-based intervention. The programme mixes classroom didactic content, simulation-based learning and extensive clinical or practice immersion hours supervised by faculty and expert preceptors.

Depending on entry pathway, study plans include foundational advanced practice courses for BSN-to-DNP students and specialty or leadership-focused practicum sequences for post-master’s DNP candidates. Entry requirements

• For BSN-to-DNP applicants: a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited programme, an active RN licence, and a competitive undergraduate GPA. Relevant clinical experience is strongly recommended.
• For post-master’s DNP applicants: a Master of Science in Nursing or related advanced nursing degree from an accredited institution and an active RN licence; transcripts should document graduate-level preparation.
• Common application materials: personal statement outlining professional goals and a proposed focus for the DNP project, current résumé or CV, official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions, and professional references.
• Candidates may be required to demonstrate clinical experience and readiness for graduate-level study; some specialty tracks expect prior experience in the intended population focus. Additional requirements such as immunisation, background checks and drug screening are typical for clinical practicum placements.

DNP graduates pursue a range of advanced clinical and leadership roles. Common career pathways include advanced practice roles such as nurse practitioner, clinical specialist and primary care provider; leadership positions such as director of nursing, clinical manager or quality improvement director; and system-level roles in healthcare organisations focusing on policy, informatics, population health, or implementation of evidence-based care.

Other graduates work in academic and educational settings, taking on clinical faculty or practice-education roles, or they move into healthcare consulting, public health leadership, and organisational change management positions where advanced practice knowledge and project leadership are required.
