What you'll study

The programme builds a broad grounding in biological science while emphasising molecular and laboratory skills used in biotechnology. You will take core courses in cell biology, genetics, microbiology and biochemistry, alongside specialist classes that cover recombinant DNA techniques, molecular biology, bioinformatics and applied laboratory methods. Coursework typically includes both lecture and laboratory components to develop technical competence in microscopy, aseptic technique, PCR, electrophoresis, protein analysis and basic tissue culture.

Students also study supporting subjects such as statistics, organic chemistry and calculus to ensure quantitative understanding of experimental design and data analysis. Many students undertake a capstone research project or an independent honours thesis under faculty supervision, and there are opportunities for field-based modules that leverage Hawaiʻi’s unique ecosystems for ecological and marine biotechnology applications.

Entry requirements

Admission is through the University of Hawaiʻi system and applicants are expected to meet general undergraduate entry standards. Typical preparation includes a high school diploma or equivalent with strong performance in biology, chemistry and mathematics. Recommended preparatory subjects are college-preparatory biology, chemistry and at least one year of algebra or precalculus; introductory calculus and physics are advantageous for some pathways.

Applicants may be asked to provide academic transcripts and a personal statement describing their interest in biotechnology. Transfer students from community colleges or other universities are welcome and should present college-level coursework in the sciences and recommended general education credits.

Graduates are prepared for a range of entry-level roles in biotechnology and related sectors. Common job destinations include laboratory technician or research assistant positions in academic, government and commercial laboratories; roles in quality control, manufacturing support and regulatory compliance for biotech or pharmaceutical firms; and positions in environmental and marine biotechnology services.

The degree also provides a solid foundation for graduate study (MSc/PhD) in molecular biology, biotechnology or related disciplines, and for professional programmes in medicine, dentistry or allied health with appropriate additional preparation. Many alumni pursue careers with research institutes, hospitals, environmental organisations and private companies, or continue in research through internships and post-baccalaureate training.
