Description

The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) offers a unique and exciting opportunity for aspiring researchers through PhD studentships in the Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures, led by Professor Andras Kis. Situated in Lausanne, Switzerland, EPFL is one of Europe’s most dynamic research institutions, renowned for its cutting-edge facilities and commitment to pushing the boundaries of science and technology.

A Hub for Innovation in 2D Materials and Nanoelectronics

The Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures (LANES) is at the forefront of research into novel nanoelectronic devices, focusing particularly on the emerging field of 2D materials. These materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, exhibit unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, making them ideal candidates for next-generation electronic devices.

PhD candidates at LANES have the chance to explore a wide array of research projects that bridge fundamental science and practical application. The group is dedicated to developing nanoelectronic devices, investigating quantum transport, optical properties, and nanoscale mechanical systems, and advancing methods for synthesizing high-quality 2D materials.

Degree Level

EPFL Switzerland PhD Studentship 2025 is available to undertake Studentship level programs at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).

Available Subjects

Following subject are available to study under this scholarship program.

  • 2D Matrerials
  • Nanoelectronics
  • Nanotechnology

Key Research Areas

PhD projects at LANES span a diverse range of topics:

  • Quantum Transport: Investigating the behavior of electrons in 2D semiconductor devices under quantum mechanical regimes.
  • Optics and Optoelectronics: Studying the interaction between photons and 2D materials for potential applications in photodetectors and light-emitting devices.
  • Synthesis of 2D Materials: Developing new methods to grow and integrate high-quality 2D materials for device applications.
  • Field-Effect Devices: Designing and fabricating transistors and related structures to test the electronic properties of novel materials.
  • Nanomechanical Systems: Exploring the mechanical behavior of 2D materials for use in sensors and actuators.

Benefits

Advanced Facilities for High-Impact Research

Research at LANES leverages EPFL’s advanced facilities, including a class 100 cleanroom that enables precise nanofabrication and device engineering. The group’s projects involve various state-of-the-art techniques:

  • Electrical Transport Measurements: To understand the electronic behavior of materials at the nanoscale.
  • Optical Characterization: To probe light-matter interactions in 2D materials and optoelectronic devices.
  • Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Related Techniques: For detailed surface and material analyses.

PhD students will gain hands-on experience with these techniques and contribute to a supportive, innovative research environment aimed at fostering discoveries with significant real-world potential.

Eligible Nationalities

This studentship is open to students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility and Desirable Skills

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, or materials science. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is a must. While not mandatory, previous experience in areas such as cleanroom processing, electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, programming for instrumentation, or thin film growth will be highly beneficial.

Application Procedure

Interested candidates should prepare the following documents:

  • A detailed CV (PDF or RTF format) that outlines academic and research accomplishments.
  • A brief statement of research interests highlighting relevant experience.
  • Contact information for three references.

These documents should be sent via email to job.lanes@epfl.ch.
