Benefits

  • Selection: Every year, a small group (5-6) of Academy Scholars are chosen to live and work at Harvard for two years.
  • Funding: You'll receive a yearly salary of $80,000 for these two years. However, you must complete the program within three years.
  • Start Date: You must begin the program in the fall semester following your selection. Delays or postponing the start of the first year are not allowed.
  • Leave of Absence: Between your first and second year, you can request a one-time break of up to 12 months. This leave is only approved if you are offered a permanent teaching position (tenure-track).
  • Funding Restrictions: While a Scholar, you cannot receive money, awards, or take on other commitments outside of the program.

Eligible Nationalities

This scholarship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

These awards are open to people with PhDs or similar doctoral degrees earned in or after August 2023, and to PhD candidates in the social sciences. If you are nearing completion of your dissertation, you must be able to submit proof of your degree completion by June 30, 2025 to start on August 1, 2025. People who have already received a Harvard postdoctoral fellowship cannot apply.

What to submit:

  • CV (Resume) with Publications List: Briefly summarize your education and professional experience, including any published works.
  • Research Proposal (2,000 words max): Outline your research goals, methods, and how it fits within your field.
  • Writing Sample (50 pages max): Share a strong example of your academic writing, like a dissertation chapter or published journal article.
  • PhD Transcript: Provide an official copy of your transcript showing your doctoral program coursework.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation: Ask three references to submit letters on your behalf through the online application by the deadline.

Additional Information:

Footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies in your research proposal are allowed but not required. They won't count towards the word limit.

If you attended a university outside the US, provide the most official transcript documentation your university can offer for your graduate studies (Master's and PhD). Most universities are familiar with these requests and can assist you.
