Overview of the ARC Linkage PhD Research Positions

Murdoch University is seeking four highly motivated PhD candidates to join a multidisciplinary research team working on the development of AI-driven ecological monitoring tools. This project, in collaboration with ecologists, statisticians, computer scientists, and the mining industry, aims to enhance ecosystem restoration through innovative technologies.

  • Dark-diversity and community completeness in natural and rehabilitated vegetation – Species pools, taxon-based indices, and spatial-scaling.
  • Functional trait spaces in natural and rehabilitated vegetation – Functional ecology, spatial-scaling, and trait diversity.
  • Community assembly theories and modelling – Ecological saturation, niche-focused vs. neutral assembly models.
  • AI-based ecological monitoring tools – Application of machine learning and computer vision in ecological restoration.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must hold an Honours or Master’s degree in a relevant field:

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Prior experience in relevant fields such as:
  1. Community and functional ecology.
  2. Ecological restoration and vegetation rehabilitation.
  3. Programming, machine learning, and image processing (for Topic 4).
  4. Use of statistical tools (e.g., R software, multivariate analysis).

Bonus: Previous publications and knowledge of AI methodologies.
