The Sanctuary Scholarship provides:

  1. 100% Tuition Fee Waiver for the full duration of the one-year Master’s program.
  2. A cash award of £3,000, paid as follows:
  3. 25% in November 2025
  4. 25% in February 2026
  5. 50% in May 2026
  6. Payments are made via the BACs system, and successful candidates will need to provide valid UK bank details for payment.

Note: The scholarship is available only for Full-Time one-year eligible courses studied at the Newcastle City Campus and Coach Lane Campus.

Eligible Nationalities

This scholarship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Sanctuary Scholarship 2025/26, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be currently seeking asylum in the UK or be the dependant, spouse, or civil partner of someone seeking asylum.
  2. Must provide evidence of current immigration status.
  3. Must have received a conditional or unconditional offer to study a full-time one-year Master’s course at Northumbria University, starting in September 2025.
  4. Must meet all course requirements, including English language competency.
  5. Must be residing in the North East of England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland, or North Cumbria) at the time of application.
  6. Must be unable to access UK student finance (tuition fee loans or maintenance loans) due to immigration status.
  7. Dependants, spouses, or civil partners must have had that relationship at the time of the asylum application. Dependent children or step-children must have been 18 or under when the asylum application was made.


Application Procedure

Step 1: Submit Your Application

  1. Complete the Sanctuary Scholarship application form.
  2. Submit the application before 16:00 on Friday, 25 April 2025.
  3. Only applications from individuals residing in the UK will be considered.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documentation

Submit the following documents along with your application:

  1. Proof of immigration status
  2. Offer letter from Northumbria University
  3. Relevant supporting documents
  4. The selection process will include an interview.

Step 3: Selection and Notification

  1. The scholarship selection process takes into account the application form, documentation, and interview performance.
  2. Successful candidates will be informed via email.
  3. Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted.

Important Information

  1. The Sanctuary Scholarship is intended for students who are currently unable to access UK student finance due to their immigration status.
  2. The cash award will be paid only if the student remains fully registered on their course.
  3. If a student's immigration status changes, they must inform Northumbria University immediately.
  4. Recipients are not eligible for any other Northumbria University scholarships while holding the Sanctuary Scholarship.
  5. If the student defers or withdraws from their course, the scholarship will be revoked.
  6. The scholarship is granted for one academic year only.
