The programme emphasises rigorous research preparation, theoretical development and the design and conduct of original research in nursing. Core areas typically include advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods, biostatistics, epidemiology, nursing theory and philosophy of science, health systems and policy, and ethics in research. Students choose advanced coursework aligned with their concentration—Nursing Administration, Nursing Research, or Clinical Nursing—which may cover topics such as organisational leadership, health-care quality and safety, implementation science, advanced clinical interventions, and specialty-specific clinical scholarship.

Study is structured around a combination of coursework, comprehensive examinations, practicum or research assistant experiences, and a doctoral dissertation. Coursework establishes a foundation in research methods and substantive nursing knowledge, while mentored research hours and practicum placements provide applied experience. The dissertation demonstrates the candidate's ability to plan, execute and disseminate independent, peer-reviewed research that contributes to nursing science and practice.

Entry requirements

• Academic background: A master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or a closely related field from an accredited institution is normally required.
• Professional licensure: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the student’s state or country of practice.
• Preparatory experience: Evidence of clinical experience or professional practice in nursing; leadership or teaching experience is advantageous, particularly for the Administration track.
• Application materials: A curriculum vitae or résumé, a personal statement outlining research interests and career goals, and academic transcripts.
• References and interview: Academic or professional references (typically two or three) and, where required, an interview with faculty to assess fit with faculty expertise and research priorities.
• Research readiness: Demonstrated potential for doctoral-level research through prior scholarly work, publications, practicum experience, or a clear research agenda. Some applicants may be asked to submit a writing sample or research proposal.

Graduates of the PhD programme commonly pursue careers in academic nursing as faculty and programme leaders, where they teach, supervise graduate students and lead research initiatives. Other career pathways include nurse scientist or principal investigator roles in health systems, government and non-profit research organisations, and industry positions focused on clinical research, outcomes evaluation and health services research.

Those concentrating in Nursing Administration may move into senior leadership roles such as chief nursing officer, director of clinical operations or organisational quality and safety leadership. Clinical Nursing and Nursing Research graduates often take on roles as clinical investigators, clinical specialists with a research portfolio, policy advisors or consultants who translate research into practice and policy.
